The Arsenal Paper Round: Wednesday June 23, 2010

It's been a quiet start in terms of Arsenal news today.

Yesterday saw four of our first team start for France: Sagna, Gallas, Clichy and Diaby. However they weren't able to lift their country to victory and were defeated by the hosts South Africa 3-1.
Those two countries have now left the competition but Carlos Vela's Mexico are through to the knockout stages despite their 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

Vela didn't start the tie due to injury and it is not known if he'll be able to take any further part in the tournament.
I suppose the one positive of France not going through is that our four players will now have two extra weeks holiday.

England, lacking any Arsenal representatives after Theo Walcott was unexpectedly left at home, take on Slovenia this afternoon.

One English player who might at Arsenal next season is Joe Cole. After yesterday's Sun piece, The Guardian have checked with Manchester United who've told them they aren't interested in the player.

This is on top of Harry Redknapp telling the media Cole hasn't wanted to talk to him about a move to Tottenham.

So it's anyone's guess where he'll end up.

I would love to see him at the Grove next season. But it would be good to get some defenders in before we look again at our attacking options.
Other games in the World Cup today include USA v Algeria, Ghana v Germany and Australia v Serbia.

Further updates on Twitter throughout the day if there is anything to talk about.
