Arsenal finally confirm the signing of Sébastien Squillaci

Arsenal have announced the signing of Sébastien Squillaci on the obligatory long term contract for an disclosed fee.

The 30-year-old France international is the third player to sign for Arsene Wenger this summer.

The defender will wear the number 18 shirt vacated by Mikael Silvestre after his contract was not renewed by the club.
On joining the club, Squillaci said:
"This is an exciting move for me. Arsène Wenger is a highly respected coach who I am very much looking forward to working with and of course, I know some of the Arsenal players through the national team.
"Arsenal is recognised as a side that not only plays beautiful football but one that challenges for trophies at the highest level and I am very excited to be joining such a fantastic club."
Manager Arsene Wenger said:
"Sebastien has many qualities that will add to the strength of our squad. He is quick, hugely experienced with an aggressive edge to his game.
"His signing will give us some variation at the back as we look to build on last season's campaign and fight for silverware this year."
Our new signing will train with his new team mates on Friday but the manager said he would not be involved in the game with Blackburn on Saturday.

The 6ft 1in defender started his professional career at his home town club of Toulon before making the switch to Monaco. He left the principality club for a two season spell at Lyon.

In 2008 he moved to Spain to play for Sevilla. He was called up to the French national team in 2004 and has 21 caps, having most recently played for Les Bleus at the World Cup in their first group game against the hosts South Africa.

At Monaco he reached the Champions League final. On route to his team played Real Madridm where Squillaci's scored a vital away goal for his side at the Bernabéu.

In the semi final the French side beat Chelsea to face FC Porto in the final, which they lost to José Mourinho's side.

He has won the following honours:

Ligue 2 (1): 2001–02

Coupe de la Ligue (1): 2002-03

Ligue 1 (2): 2006–07, 2007–08
Trophée des Champions (1): 2006

Copa del Rey (1): 2009-10

  1. Just a goalie now and we're in good nick.
No new goalie then we might just get close again having nothing to show for it.

Our 4 CBs are very competent: Verma, Koshel, Squill, Djourou. These are not big names but these 4 can be efficient if Wenger finds a way of keeping all 4 fit through the long hard season. Of course the work will be for more easier with a keeper who has the confidence of his defenders. That always makes the difference.
