Sunderland v Arsenal: Player ratings

Sunderland v Arsenal
Premier League
At the Stadium of Light

Manuel Almunia:  Positive game with strong handling and decent saves. Commanded his box and the defence in front of him. 7

Bacray Sagna: Had a good game overall. Didn't get forward a lot but that was down to Sunderland's game plan. Lost 75% of his tackles. 6

Sebastien Squillaci: Solid performance. You can see why Wenger signed him. Strong in the air and commanding at the back. Pleasing performance. 7

Laurent Koscielny: Like Squillaci kept the Sunderland attack at bay. Overall a good performance but needs a better clearance completion rate (29% successful) as this put us under pressure. 7

Gael Clichy: A good game for me. Some blaming him for the goal, but he couldn't foresee his clearance hitting Koscielny. 7

Cesc Fabregas: Amazing good fortune for the goal. Did everything else right while on the pitch. 7

Alex Song: Disappointingly sent off. Shouldn't have been booked for the first foul - never touched the player - but should have been wise to the second challenge which earned him another yellow and in turn the red. 5

Jack Wilshere: Great first half but moved into a more defensive position once Song was sent off. Great to see him given a chance in these games but I would have rested him. Looked tired and faded. 6

Samir Nasri: Was anonymous in the first half. Came to life in the second. But really needed to offer us an outlet. His clever dribbling gets us out of tight spots but needs to find his shooting boots. 6

Marouane Chamakh: Helped the team and worked tirelessly for the cause. Perhaps need to be more selfish when in front of goal. An encouraging game. 7

Andrey Arshavin: Looks out of sorts. Had two good opportunity to add to the score but fluffed his chances. Needs to have more of an impact on the whole of our game, not just drifting in and out. 6

Tomas Rosicky: Surprised he didn't start. Gave us impetus going forward with great passing (96% completed) but like Arshavin and Nasri needs to find his shooting boots. Lucky with the penalty. On another day would have gone in. 7

Denilson: Like with Rosicky, surprised he didn't start. Had a good game passing was good, unlucky with his shot from distance. Might have squeezed in on another day. 7
