Vermaelen will go under the knife - Arsene needs a defender

Thomas Vermaelen is set to under go surgery to find out exactly what is wrong with his Achilles.

The defender hasn't been seen in an Arsenal shirt since the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers in August after picking up the injury in early September whilst on international duty.

Vermaelen, 25, will have exploratory surgery with a view to discovering the problem.

If surgeons find the problem during he operation, they will try and repair the damage there and then rather than go back at a later time to fix the issue.

It will mean the Belgium international will be out for a minimum of two months.

The Daily Mail published a story yesterday stating the operation was the next move, something which I've now been able to confirm with club sources.

The news will force Arsene Wenger into the transfer market as it will leave him with only three senior recognised central defenders.

And with Sebastien Squillaci out for a minimum of two weeks with a hamstring problem, Wenger will want to identify his potential signing sooner rather than later.

West Ham defender Matthew Upson has been mentioned as a possible target and after the Ipswich game last night, the Frenchman refused to comment on the possible return to north London of the Englishman.
