Arsene Wenger gives injury update on Thomas Vermaelen

Arsene Wenger has refused to put a date on the return of defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The central defender has not been seen in an Arsenal shirt since the 2-1 win against Blackburn at Ewood Park on August 28.

He had an operation to remove a tendon in his leg next to his Achilles in Sweden last month and began running in training last week.

Asked how the Belgium international was progrssing, Wenger told his lunchtime news conference:
"He is doing better and overall he is in the normal process of rebabilitation. When he will be fit again I don't know.
"It's very difficult to set any time on it."
Asked if a time frame of two to three weeks was possible for Vermaelen's return, the Arsenal manager replied:
"That's about right."
