Vermaelen under went surgery on his left achilles in Sweden on Monday and had been not expected to train for up to a month.
However Wenger has revealed the surgery was a success and the Belgium international could return to training in two to three weeks.
In his column for the official Arsenal programme, Wenger said:
"I'm glad to say that Thomas' surgery went very well and we should see him training again in two or three weeks."
The Arsenal manager revealed the decision to buy Per Mertesacker was influenced by Vermaelen's surgery.
The German is expected to make his Arsenal debut later this afternoon.
