Cazorla's announcement -van P€r$i€: staying/going -Vermaelen's promotion -Mirallas scouted

Morning Gooners.

It's less than two weeks now until we kick off the season at The Grove against Sunderland. And while I can't wait to get back to watch Arsenal, the London Olympics really are pulling all my attention at the moment. I found myself watching the pommel horse final yesterday afternoon and getting excited about the chances of the two British guys involved - having no idea  about this event whatsoever.

It's amazing how an event such as London 2012 has really brought the country together. It's all over the news, every front page of every newspaper is leading with it and every where you go there are reminders. Much as I love football, it has no place in the Olympics. This weekend has proved to me that the Olympic Games are the greatest show on earth.

Maybe it's because Arsenal haven't won anything in so long that I'm really overjoyed when Great Britain pick up all different types of medals. But if it feels that good to win supporting someone you don't know or only have a passing interest in an event, I can't wait to feel that emotion when Arsenal finally win something again.

Perhaps it is pre-season optimism, but I really think we've got a good chance of picking up silverware this term. The business the manager has done in the window has been hugely encouraging. Two international strikers and a world class midfielder (whose signing has been announced by everyone but the two clubs involved) are great additions to a squad which at the moment has only lost one senior member (Manuel Almunia).

Avoid the catastrophic start to the season and we can close the gap on the two Manchester clubs.

Will Robin van P€r$i€ be an Arsenal player come September 1st? No one really knows at this point. If he stays there is no way he can continue as club captain and Wenger is talking more and more to Thomas Vermaelen at the training ground about preparations for the forthcoming season rather than the Dutchman.

Even if van P€r$i€ doesn't leave, I believe the Belgium international will be promoted to wear the armband this coming season.

The Daily Mirror believe there is more of a chance van P€r$i€ will start the season in north London, while the Daily Mail think because Alex Ferguson stayed behind from Manchester United's pre-season tour, red nose is prepared to pay Arsenal's asking price.

One place the Dutchman doesn't appear to be going is Manchester City with Roberto Mancini admitting defeat in the race to sign our captain.

At the moment it's one huge mess and nothing has been announced about Theo Walcott's future with the club. Surely if he doesn't sign a new deal before the month is out he'll have to be sold. He can't be allowed to leave for free.

Transfer rumour of the day is from the Daily Mail who say we're running the rule over Olympiakos's 24-year-old Belgium striker Kevin Mirallas. Can't see it myself, not when we've got Ju Young Park still on the books.

That's it for today. I'll be back tomorrow with more.
