Wilshere targets trophies -Mertesacker won't reveal secret -Wenger targets South American duo?

Morning Gooners

The date and time for our FA Cup replay has been set and we're to face Swansea again at the Grove on January 16 at 7.30pm. Bit of a strange kick off time but no doubt it has been dictated by ESPN who are to broadcast the game live.

Speaking after Sunday's game, Jack Wilshere has reiterated the team's desire to pick up silverware this season and hopes the FA Cup can be the catalyst for future success.

He said:

"We all want a trophy. As players when you finish a career, you look back and see how many trophies you won, so we all want them and we know how much the fans do.
"We're all hungry for it and maybe if we get a trophy this year it can open the way for a few more.
"We've got a good crop of young players and experienced ones as well with Arteta and others, so if we get a trophy this year or in the next couple of years we can really build something, a strong team and be strong in the next few years."
I think we all know the limitations with this squad. We've not got enough quality players in it. But what we might lack in quality we can make up for in spirit and determination. And on its day, this group of players can beat any team in the league. We've just got to be up for it.

This week has highlighted yet again the Jekyll and Hyde qualities of this team. An abject performance against Southampton and then five days later a much more committed and assured one against Swansea. And I put that down to whether this team is up for the fight.

Jack Wilshere deserves to be winning trophies. He gives his all with every performance he puts in on the pitch and it seems to me when he leaves the field at the end of 90 minutes there isn't much left at all in his tank.

He's a winner. He wants to pick up silverware with Arsenal. I just hope the rest of the team can help him to achieve his goals at our club.

Per Mertesacker has also spoken of the team's aims for the remaining five months of the campaign.

He said:

"We are always looking to win something and we can achieve something with this group. We have a lively group so our thoughts are now on the next match.
"That’s the most important thing for us, not what’s going to happen in May.
"We have a few targets in our team that are possible this year. We won’t talk about it, we’ll just see what happens in the next few important weeks on the pitch."
You have to hope the players have targeted an FA Cup win and a top four finish as a minimum requirement for this to end up being a good season. And Mertesacker is correct, the next few weeks are important guides to how our season will pan out.

Get results against Manchester City, Swansea and Chelsea and then we can really push on.

But I think the club needs to ensure the squad is able to cope with the number of games we've got coming up, by adding new players to it.

Today the Daily Mail link us with Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas. We're short in the centre forwards department and the 23-year-old Chile international could offer us an option in attack.

And the Daily Mirror once again say we're in for Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia as the 26-year-old Argentine international has "made it clear he wants to move in January".

That's it for today. Back with more tomorrow.
