It's interesting to read in The Guardian today that as soon as Luis Suarez's agent Pere Guardiola found out that Arsenal had submitted a £30m bid for his client he was on his way to Anfield to discover what was going on.
While it would appear that Liverpool want closer to £50m for the player, that is not really realistic in this current economic climate. And they also don't want to lose him to another Premier League club. However classing us as a rival is a bit disingenuous as the Merseyside clubs fight it our for sixth spot.
Will we go back with an improved offer for the striker? I wouldn't put it past Arsene Wenger. It feels like this £70m plus is burning a hole in his back pocket and he's desperate to spend it.
Our primary target is Gonzalo Higuain. But it appears that Real Madrid are trying to talk him round into staying in the Spanish capital. There are expectations that Carlo Ancelotti intends to speak with Higuaín next Monday to try and persuade him to stay. However I've been told that Higuain is determined to leave and look for a new challenge.
Another striker we should be keeping tabs on is Aston Villa's Christian Benteke who has handed in a transfer request. It appears that once the 22-year-old Belgian international did this, his club had no choice but to make the striker's move public. I guess they are trying to start a transfer auction for the 22-year-old. But I don't see us offering more than £15m for him.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror report Thomas Vermaelen is set to miss the club's pre-season tour with a back injury. He could also miss the start of the season.
That's it for today. Back with more tomorrow.
